Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Improved Work Permit Extension Pathway for Temporary Foreign Workers

The Government of Canada has reaffirmed and clarified measures that allow temporary foreign workers who apply to extend their work permits before their current permit expires to maintain their status and continue working under the conditions of their existing permit while their application is being processed. This provides greater certainty for employers and helps reduce interruptions to business operations during permit renewals.

For communities such as Revelstoke, where businesses rely on skilled and experienced workers across multiple sectors, maintaining continuity during permit renewals is essential to business stability and service delivery.

“This is exactly the kind of practical policy improvement that businesses have been asking for,” said Caroline Lachapelle, CEO of the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce. “When a permit extension is already in process, there should not be uncertainty around whether a business can continue relying on a trained employee.”

The Chamber has been actively engaged in advocacy efforts aimed at improving immigration and workforce policies that better reflect the realities of rural and tourism-dependent communities. It has been successful in doing this through the 'Resort Chambers of Commerce Coalition' as well as the Canadian and BC Chambers of Commerce. This announcement highlights the importance of policies that support employers and workers while reducing unnecessary administrative burdens.

Under the current framework, workers who submit an application to extend their work permit before it expires may continue working while their application is being processed, provided the conditions of their original permit remain the same. The Government of Canada states that these workers maintain their status in Canada and can continue working under the conditions of their existing permit until a decision is made on their application.

The Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce will continue advocating for workforce and immigration policies that support local businesses, strengthen economic resilience, and reflect the realities of communities like Revelstoke.
