New Short-Term Rental Registry: What BC Hosts Need to Know

New Short-Term Rental Registry: What BC Hosts Need to Know
The BC Government has announced a new provincial short-term rental (STR) registry, set to launch on May 1, 2025, as part of efforts to regulate the industry and ensure compliance with existing laws.
What This Means for STR Hosts
  • Mandatory Registration: All short-term rental hosts in BC must register with the provincial STR registry before listing on platforms such as Airbnb, Vrbo, and others.
  • Registration Number Requirement: Hosts will receive a unique registration number that must be displayed on all STR listings.
  • Enforcement Begins June 1, 2025: Any listing without a valid registration number will be removed from booking platforms.
Registration Fees & Discounts
  • Early Registration Discounts:
    • 50% off if registered by February 28, 2025
    • 25% off if registered by March 31, 2025
  • Annual Fees:
    • $100 for an STR where the host lives (e.g., a primary home rented while away or a room rental).
    • $450 for a non-primary residence (e.g., a secondary suite, cottage, or laneway home).
    • $600 for an entire strata hotel.
Why This Matters
This registry is part of the Province’s strategy to crack down on illegal short-term rentals, ensuring fair competition for compliant hosts while addressing BC’s housing crisis. Local municipal requirements and business licensing still apply, so hosts should also check with their local government for additional rules.
