Chamber Advocacy Leads to Shift in Tax Burden for 2026
"On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased to share an important advocacy win for Revelstoke’s business community. City Council has approved shifting 3% of municipal tax revenue from the Class 6 Business/Other tax classification to Class 8 Recreation/Non-Profit for 2026. This will reduce the portion of the municipal tax burden assigned to the business class and represents a meaningful step toward a fairer and more sustainable distribution of taxes in our community.
We thank Councilor Matt Cherry for bringing the motion forward through the Finance Standing Committee, and Mayor and Council for recognizing the concerns raised by the business community and taking action. The motion was approved by a 5–1 vote, with Councilor Orlando opposed.
This decision reflects consistent and collaborative advocacy by the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce over the past few years. Through our Business Tax Committee, we have gathered and reviewed data, created resources to help members understand the tax system, submitted formal recommendations during the City’s budget process, and attended numerous meetings with Council and City staff to discuss the disproportionate burden placed on local businesses.
While this change does not resolve every concern, it is tangible progress and demonstrates the value of ensuring the business community has a strong, informed voice at the decision-making table. We look forward to continuing our work with the City toward a transparent, balanced, and competitive tax structure for Revelstoke."
