The Canadian Chamber of Commerce's Business Data Lab has launched the Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker, an interactive tool designed to illustrate the deep economic ties between Canada and the United States and to highlight the potential risks posed by emerging trade barriers.

According to the Canadian Chamber, the Canada-U.S. trade relationship is substantial, with approximately $3.6 billion in goods crossing the border daily, contributing to a $1.3 trillion annual trade partnership. This economic interdependence supports 1.4 million American jobs linked to Canadian exports and 2.3 million Canadian jobs tied to U.S. exports. Notably, 50% of bilateral goods trade occurs between related companies, underscoring the integration of the two economies.

The Canadian Chamber warns that the introduction of a 25% tariff could have significant economic repercussions, potentially reducing Canada's GDP by 2.6% and costing Canadian households an average of $1,900 annually. In the U.S., such a tariff could lead to a 1.6% GDP decline, with families losing about $1,300 per year. Industries such as automotive, agriculture, and energy could face disruptions, leading to increased prices for consumers.

Candace Laing, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the human impact of trade policies, stating, 'Trade isn’t just about dollars—it’s about people. While governments might disagree, the ties between our businesses, workers, and communities are too important to be collateral damage in political disputes.'

The Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker aims to provide real-time insights into trade flows and industry trends, serving as a resource for businesses and policymakers to navigate uncertainties and to advocate for policies that strengthen the trade relationship between the two nations.
